FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions about bringing your products into the U.S. market? Here are answers to the most common questions we get about FDA registration, USDA compliance, and our import/export support services.
Why do I need a US agent?
If your food facility is outside the US, FDA requires you to appoint a US-based agent. We act as your reliable contact with the FDA, helping keep your registration current and ensuring you receive critical FDA communications promptly.
What happens if I don’t register my facility?
Your shipments to the US could be held or refused, and you could face fines or other penalties. US importers usually won’t clear your products without an active FDA registration.
What if I’m not sure whether I need to register?
We’ll review your situation. If it turns out you don’t need to register, we can provide a letter explaining why — and refund most of your fee.
Which facilities must register?
Any facility (in the US or abroad) that manufactures, processes, packs, or holds food for human or animal consumption in the US. This includes manufacturers, repackers, and storage facilities.
Are any facilities exempt?
Yes. Farms (when products are not processed off the farm), retail food establishments, restaurants, nonprofit food facilities, and facilities regulated exclusively by the USDA (like certain meat and poultry plants) do not need to register.
Which foods are covered?
Most foods: fruits, vegetables, dairy, seafood, bakery items, pet food, dietary supplements, alcoholic beverages, and food additives.
When do I need to renew?
FDA requires biennial renewal every even-numbered year (e.g., 2024, 2026). Registrations must also be updated within 60 days of significant changes.
Do US facilities need to appoint an agent?
No, US-based facilities do not need a US agent. But we can still help you complete the registration quickly and correctly.
How long does registration take?
With your complete information, we file in 1–2 business days. As of mid-2025, FDA manually reviews all new registrations, which can take about 1–2 weeks. Do not ship until you have received your finalized registration.
What information do you need from me?
To register your products with the FDA or USDA, we’ll need your facility name and address, parent company details (if any), and your main and emergency contact information. We’ll also ask for all trade names you use and a brief description of the types of food or products you handle. This ensures your registration is complete, accurate, and compliant with U.S. regulations.
Is it expensive to hire an agent?
FDA estimates typical agent fees at about $1,200/year. Our fees are usually lower and include routine updates and renewals.
Am I obligated if I ask for more information?
No. There’s no obligation until you review and sign a contract. We keep your information strictly confidential.
